Our Roots

In the late 1800’s, T. Bache Bleecker and Harriman N. Simmons founded Bleecker & Simmons Tea in New York City where it flourished during the Edwardian Age in America. As partners, they moved their business in 1918 from Greenwich Street to 90 Front Street where they donated part of their four-story building to the Committee for the Coffee, Tea, and Spice. The Simmons Spice Mill, a trade publication, is known to have supported the manufacturing of paper products rather than tin in an effort to support troops during World War I. The Great Depression and ill health caused the business to decline.

A New Vision: Tea With A Purpose

Michael Everett is originally from Toms River, NJ and is the son of Sarah Everett (nee Simmons). Michael worked 32 years at Atlantic City High School, first as an English teacher and then as a Guidance Counselor. Upon retiring from the public school system he became the Director of the Champions of Youth program that serves disadvantaged youth through community partnerships. His creation of this unique program encouraged high school students of Atlantic City to stretch beyond the traditional classroom setting and transcend boundaries to ensure success.

I have long believed a life of service is one of the ways we afford ourselves and others a more meaningful existence. The focus of the resurrected Bleecker & Simmons Tea, founded in 2018, is to contribute to building a better, stronger community. I have dedicated 100% of the company’s profits to serving and supporting those who are in need, are marginalized, or are under served. The company’s purpose is congruent with principles which have guided my life and to which I have committed my resolve, my time, and my energy.
